Summary: Comparing the effect of arthroscopic iliopsoas release on hip range of motion in men and women.

Abstract:
Thirty-six of 148 (24.3%) of men and 180 of 342 (52.6) women had arthroscopic iliopsoas release. The age range was 12 to 70 years; mean age, 33.3 years. There was no significant difference in mean age (p>0.05) or BMI (p>0.05) between groups. Preoperative terminal flexion was lower in men (86.70) than women (95.40) in the iliopsoas release group (p=0.0001) and lower in men (93.40) than women (96.70) in the non-release group (p=0.03). Preoperative internal rotation was also lower in men (3.90) than women (10.30) in the Iliopsoas release group (p=0.004) and lower in men (4.60) than women (10.60) in the non-release group (p=0.03). Following arthroscopic iliopsoas release, terminal flexion in men had significantly higher (p=0.009) improvement (15.90) compared to improvement in the non-release group (9.90). Following arthroscopy, internal rotation in men improved 10.20 in the Iliopsoas release group and 10.90 in the non-release group, but the difference between groups did not reach significance (p= 0.67). Following arthroscopy, terminal flexion in women improved 9.70 in the Iliopsoas release group and 8.40 in the non-release group, but the difference between groups did not reach significance (p= 0.3). Following arthroscopy, internal rotation in women improved 11.70 in the Iliopsoas release group and 10.30 in the non-release group, but the difference between groups did not reach significance (p= 0.14).
